In the Gulf of Thailand and 15 kilometers off the coast of Cambodia lies a gem of Vietnam: Phu Quoc Island. It has become a very popular location and Cambodia claims to own the island for it. With soft sandy beaches, clear waters and swaying palm trees a lovely destination to relax.

There are currently around 80,000 people living at the island and it is the most popular for its special fish saus, black pepper and olive oil. It is the perfect place to eat fresh fish along the beach. Phu Quoc Island is also very popular with expats who work in Ho Chi Minh City and want to escape the city in the weekend.
The island is developing rapidly, but there is still a peaceful atmosphere and most places are only accessible via unpaved roads. It is seen as the leading SmartCity in Asia, where luxury, technology and paradise intersect.

There are beautiful beaches where you can snorkel/dive or see the perfect sunset or sunrise. Ong Lang Beach, An Thoi Islands and Turtle Island are the perfect places to discover the underwater world. Besides the beaches Phu Quoc Island has more to offer!

How to get there?

BY PLANE

Phu Quoc’s airport: Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC). You can fly from many domestic places in Vietnam for a cheap price and also from nearby other countries, such as Thailand.

From here on, you can take a taxi or shuttle bus to your accommodation.

BY SPEEDBOAT

Take a direct boat from Rach Gia Harbor. A ticket costs around 320,000 VND and the journey takes about 2.5 hours. Buy tickets at the website of SuperDong.

Another option is to take a combi-ticket where you have your bus and boat ticket in one. These tickets cost round 26 USD and can be bought at travel agencies or your accommodations.

How long to stay?

3 - 5 days

Top Spots- Phu Quoc

Star Beach/Sao Beach, Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc itself is already a paradise and is also known for its breathtaking beaches with palm-fringed waters. Sao beach is considered best beach overall in Asia. With soft white sand and crystal clear seas. It is a prefect place to lay down or walk around to enjoy the beautiful environment. Although, it is changing because people are complaining about the amount of waste on the beach. Not sure if it is because people do not care enough to clean or if it is tides washing up the waste.

Night Market

The night market of Phu Quoc is a very popular night attraction. It has night bars, street vendors and restaurants. Eat cheap foods and enjoy some drinks in the colorful streets.

Address: Duong Dong Town

Cau Temple

This formal temple was built in 1937 and is dedicated to Thien Hau, the goddess of the sea. A rock temple that is part lighthouse and part shrine. It has a beautiful view over Duong Dong Town, the sea and port. It is a very nice place to be during sunset, because of the reflection of the sun on the water.

Address: Duong Dong

Diving and Snorkeling

The waters around Phu Quoc are perfect for snorkeling and diving. Ong Lang Beach, An Thoi Island or Turtle Island are the most popular places to discover. The reefs are considered best in Vietnam and totally worth your money. The best time for diving and snorkeling is between November and May.

Fishing Villages

The fishing village lies between the Nhum and Coc canals. It is only 800 meters wide and 4 kilometers long. Expect to see simple houses built on stilts, cats and dogs running around and chickens and ducks that are being bred. It is a very simple life and they expect the village there in 2030 is no longer.

Address: Between Nhum and Coc canals

Pepper Farm

Phu Quoc is known for its pepper and there are many plantations. There are currently 400 hectares of plantations and farms. They produce 3 different varieties of pepper in the regions of Phu Quoc: Cua Duong, Cua Can Village, Ganh Dau Village and Thom Village. Visit a farm and see how the process works or go with a tour.

Local Food in Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc Island is, as you probably noticed, an island. Fish lovers, attention please, because that means: a lot of seafood! The food in Phu quoc is heavily influenced by the harvest of fresh seafood, vegetables and herbs. The island is also famous for her fish sauce with the largest fish-sauce makers on the island. Take a short walk from the market in Duong Dong and you will notice all the huge wooden vats full of fish sauce.

Goi Ca Mai (Herring Salad)

A very healthy dish. The herring provides high levels of essential fats that play a big role in the development and function of a normal brain. Herring salad is a raw seafood salad that comes with a platter of traditional rice paper rolls, vegetable and different dipping sauces. The herring is finely cut and mixed with lime juice, chili, coconut, chopped onions. It’s an amazing start for your dinner or as lunch. Where? The best place to try this dish would be near to the beachside, but you can also find it in Duong Dong Town.

Sim wine

Another wine, but this one is made from liquefied sim fruit mixed in with rice wine. The fruit for this wine grows all over the island and is good for your digestion. It tastes like blackcurrant juice mixed with alcohol. Where? You get this wine all over the island.

Tram Mushroom

Tram mushroom is found in the mangrove forest of Phu Quoc Island. It is a seasonal mushroom which and you can find them during the beginning of the rainy season. The mushroom is cooked in a broth that contains shrimp, squid or chicken. They can also be served dried and you can eat them as a snack as well.

Where? You can find the dried mushrooms at the Duong Dong Market. The soup is made in any Vietnamese restaurant in 30/4 Street in Duong Dong Town.
